E-Mail Server Survey Results for January 2003
Here are the results for our second monthly E-Mail Server Survey taken during the month of January, 2003. The process used to obtain the results was:
- Check random internet addresses for open port 25 (SMTP).
- Connect (TCP) to the open port, record banner
- Send "EHLO my.host.name", record EHLO response
- Send "HELP", record HELP response
- send "QUIT"
- Using Nmap, attempt to derive operating system guess and uptime data.
- Load the results into a SQL database for data analysis.
This month's sample size was 30,000 open SMTP ports.

Comments & Conclusions
- Overall the uptimes shown this month are very consistent with last month (Dec. 2002).
- I dropped the graphs this month as it is too time consuming.
If you have comments or questions about this report please email smtpsurvey@credentia.cc.
Future Plans
- Next month will not include OS or Uptime data, just Software, as the process for determining them is deemed suspicious by some network administrators.
