E-Mail Server Survey Results for April 2003
Here are the results for our third E-Mail Server Survey taken during the month of April, 2003. The process used to obtain the results was:
- Check random internet addresses for open port 25 (SMTP).
- Using the Perl Net::SMTP module, obtain banner, hostname and help output.
- Determine software category version information.
- Determine top-level domain (TLD).
- Load the results into a SQL database for data analysis.
This month's sample size was 37,563 open SMTP ports.

Comments & Conclusions
- smap and Exim are neck and neck!
- The vast majority of responding addresses were .mil sites.

Future Plans
- Due to AUP policy violations (Comcast) this will be the last survey done. Apparently NASA and the U.S. Navy did not like the unsolicited connections.
